About Martin
My Name is Martin D’Arcy. I have lived in Bramley since 2004, and in 2019 I was elected to Waverley Borough Council as Councillor for Bramley, Busbridge and Hascombe ward. While serving on Planning, Licensing and Scrutiny committees, I have tried to ensure Council policies and actions take account of their impact on the environment we depend on. In particular in addressing the climate and ecological emergency.
An active member of the Green Party, I joined South West Surrey Compass in 2015 and support cross-party collaboration and progressive politics, locally and nationally. My view is that only by working together, building on our shared interests and common values, can we create a worthwhile and viable future. I believe that we have the answers to the numerous problems that beset us, and through local, national and international cooperation we can build a world in which nature and humanity can thrive.
Martin's Background
I grew up fascinated by the natural world, studying plant science and entomology at university, and gaining a masters degree. After a range of temporary jobs in what would now be called the “gig” economy – from building work, to delivery driving via horticulture and farming, and a stint teaching English abroad, I retrained in IT and worked as an NHS IT manager for 20 years. I then pursued my passion for the natural world as a ranger with Surrey Wildlife Trust and the Thames Basin Heaths Partnership.
I continue to work as a volunteer for nature conservation and to campaign for a more sustainable society which lives within planetary boundaries in partnership with nature rather than exploiting and destroying the natural world.
